From rebel to life-long-learner by reading books and attending courses
When I was a teenager I was a solid rebel! I grew up with Sonic Youth, Rage Against the Machine, Prodigy and Nirvana. The school was a thing I went to only to socialise. Unsurprisingly, I wasn’t much in classes and my grades… well… I had to redo 2 years in secondary school! So I guess I was a pretty lazy student and most of the time I didn’t see the point in what I learned. I was always looking for shortcuts and the grade was more important than what I learned. After reading Mindset by Dr Carol S Dweck, I learned I had the Fixed Mindset at the time. Looking back I think for me, life was a better school and what I learned back then…
The easy way though college
My college times weren’t much different. I studied tourism and I found the study material easy. As a “side hustle”, I worked full time in a hotel and I went to college when I needed to. I was uninspired by teachers and I just wanted to see the world! I wanted to work and explore! And I did! Somehow I could afford a 3 week holiday to Brazil when I was 20 and still studying. And the choice was easy for me. I wanted to become a flight attendant. Getting paid when you travel! I’ll write about this in another blog post as I could write a book about my time as a flight attendant 😉
Finally finding a purpose
But during my time as an air hostess, I finally found my purpose. I bought my first camera and I started reading about photography. I wanted to set up a business and I started reading blogs and many books! A number of depressions got me interested in mental health and wellbeing. Life is definitely a journey and it throws you all over the place at times. But reading and learning new things became a major thing in my life. I even started a photography degree later in life and I’ve taken numerous business courses. I became a life-long-learner!
Finding what you love
Creating a healthy mindset and finding my purpose was one of the most important things for me to discover. For many years I felt like I lived like a sheep, just following the crowd. I worked as a flight attendant for 8 years and got sucked into the corporate world after that. Which wasn’t for me AT ALL! I am very thankful for all the things I learned. And I wouldn’t be where I am today without this experience. But I had some very unhappy and unhealthy years. So I wanted to discover myself and here are some of my favourite books that helped me along the way:
Adventures for your Soul by Shannon Kaiser. I keep re-reading this book from time to time as it really woke me up to follow my dreams and chose my path.
Ikigai by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles. This book is great on so many levels! Discover your qualities, what you want and what the world needs.
Do you need a push to stay focussed? I love Start with Why by Simon Sinek! When I thought of my own reasons for my WHY, I pinned them on the wall and I see them every single day!
Think like a Warrior by Darrin Donnelly.
Great books for artists
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards
The Artist Way by Julia Cameron. This is a must for any artist if you ask me! During her program you’ll learn so much about your self, your creativity and your work. There are also groups you can join to go through the program. This is another book I just get back to from time to time.
It also comes with a workbook! This is how I started my morning pages and I created a habit around journalling every morning.
My Biz Besties
The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks
Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
Building a Brand Story by Donald Miller. Anyone who is or will be selling a product or service MUST read this book! This book will help you so much!
How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
These books helped me so much when I went through depression! Maybe they can be of help to you as well when you’re not feeling your best.
Reinventing Your Life by Jeffrey E. Young and Janet S. Kolsko. I know it was a mix of things that got me better, but when I had my deepest darkest moments, I read this book. NEVER did I take so many notes and this book is USED! I still read it now from time to time. Every chapter I thought, naaaaah that isn’t applicable to me. Yet I would find SO much knowledge here! For anyone who is a bit lost and wants to find happiness, I cannot recommend this book enough!
The Instinct to Heal by David Servan-Schreiber.
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Aware by Dr. Daniel Siegel
Get started with healthy habits!
The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. This is a classic and easy to see why. Just by counting 1,2,3,4,5, you can change your life!
The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg is another great book about habits.
Need more focus in your life? Then Focus by Daniel Goleman is a life-changer!
Profits First by Mike Michalowicz
I heart my Life by Emily Williams
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker
Most of these books had a huge influence on my life for the better. And I’m still learning so much! Did I forget to mention any? Do you have any recommendations? Please let me know in the comments!
