One of the questions I often get is about health and fitness during travels. As a massive foodie, it’s easy to gain weight like crazy! But with some handy tools, you don’t have to lose track of your health and fitness regimes! Here are some tips to stay healthy when you’re exploring the world!
Walk a lot!
Usually, when I’m in a new destination, I walk everywhere! I’ll easily walk between 15-25 kilometres a day to explore hidden alleys and famous sites. With so much walking, I tend to not gain any weight when I’m on the road. Depending on where I am, I have some favourite shoes to bring. In warm climates, I always bring my trusted Birkenstock slippers and I can walk on them for hours! For more support, I absolutely love Nike runners will have a dual purpose. Walking around in cities and sports! For longer walks and hiking I love my trusted Salomon hiking boots! And I try to not bring any more shoes! They often take up a ton of space and depending on the destination, I try to bring 2-3 pairs of shoes max!
Bring a yoga mat!
But aside from walking, I also try to look after my body. Yoga is one of my favourite ways to look after myself. Recently I discovered amazing travel Yoga mats by Yoga Hero! They have beautiful designs, are lightweight and can easily be washed! They are made from recycled materials and are long-lasting. I used to use a towel when I travel but this makes my yoga practice so much more fun!
When I travel I always like to be active. I love swimming in the ocean, diving, going on hikes or join a local class. There are so many activities you can book when you’re on the road to stay healthy. I see more and more gyms where you book single classes for travellers. I much prefer to be active outdoors though and join in with the locals! So why not book a hiking or biking tour to explore your surroundings?!
Enjoy local specialities!
I just looooooove the local cuisine when I travel! And I’m willing to try most things on the menu. Often, local food is also very healthy. I love street food as well, and I try to taste as many local dishes as possible. Visit local markets and buy fresh herbs and ingredients. Eat plenty of vegetables and local fruits and enjoy new foods you won’t find at home. I also love using the Happy Cow App to see where the best vegan and vegetarian options are.
Sleep! Sleep! Sleep!
Especially when you’re in between different time-zones, sleep is so important! Give your body a rest and listen to your body. Also, take it easy! You don’t need to see the whole city in one day! Take plenty of breaks and drink lots of water! If you want to spoil yourself, book yourself a relaxing massage or join a meditation session in your location. Take your vitamins!
Apart from eating lots of veggies and fruits, you might want to take some supplements. Listen to what your body needs and bring a multivitamin. Also make sure you bring meds in case you get sick. I always bring some charcoal tablets, vitamins and salt sachets. Be careful to check specific countries regulations before you bring medication with you. When I was a flight attendant, I also noticed how often people don’t take precautions when it comes to travel vaccinations! Check with your GP what vaccins you’ll need and don’t forget to bring your yellow booklet.
